Studies were made on the alloying of Mg-- Th alloy by Mn and Zr, refining by addition of flux from 730 to 750 deg C and pouring the melt into a red hot crucible and melting by crucible process for 0.5 to 1 hr at 700 to 730 deg C followed by immersion of the crucible in cold water. The distribution of alloying elements on the height of the casting was determined by microscopy. The effect of the crucible process duration (holding time) on liquation of Th, Zr, and Mg, and of liquation on yield strength, elongation, and grain size of Mg-- Th, Mg- Th-- Mn, and Mg-- Th- Zr alloys was also studied.
