Effect of Cell-Free Spleen Extract on Bone Marrow Megakaryocytes of Irradiated Guinea-Pigs

Megakaryocytic recovery was studied on the 9th postirradiation day in spleen-extract-treated guinea-pigs and in saline controls following 650 r (LD5/20) whole-body Co60 gamma radiation. An accelerated regeneration of these cells was found in the extract-treated group. Centers of active megakaryocytic regeneration were observed in the marrow of animals in both groups. The incidence of these centers correlated well with survival in the two groups. Accelerated megakaryocytic regeneration appears to be one of the mechanisms by which cell-free spleen extract may reduce radiation mortality.
