MEASUREMENT OF YOUNG'S MODULUS OF ALPHA PLUTONIUM AT LOW TEMPERATURE (in French)

Journal Article · · Phys. Letters
The fundamental frequency of longitudinal vibrations in the sample was measured by a resonance method (described). Values of the Young's modulus at temperatures of 4.2 to 300 deg K were determined from the frequency. At 300 deg K a value of 9600 kg/mm/sup 2/ was found. The modulus plotted vs. temperature displayed a marked minimum between 50 and 60 deg K, indicating a single anomaly in the physical properties of Pu alpha in this region. A transition of magnetic origin seems to account most probably for the anomaly. (D.C.W.)
