The structure of the weak currents is discussed in the light of unitary symmetry. The known leptonic interaction modes of the hadrons are listed and it is shown that they imply the inclusion of more currents than the ones derived from gauge invariance. Several tests of the proposed symmetry are discussed. A short theoretical study shows that renormalization effects should be felt in the limit of unitary symmetry, but can be avoided if higher groups than SU/sub 3/ are taken into account. (auth)
