CLASSIFICATION OF LEPTON CURRENTS. Note No. 168
A description is used in which the neutrino is fourcomponent, the positive muon, the negative electron, and the neutrino are called leptons, and leptons are conserved. Unitary transformations (SU/sub 3/) are performed on the three variables mu , nu , and e to classify particles and currents, leading to independent sets of currents that have either a definite parity or chiral character. Those with definite chiral character are physically acceptable and imply that the positive helicity leptons transform under SU/sub 3/ contragradiently with respect to the negative helicity leptons. The transformation properties allow the assignment of quantum numbers similar to strangeness and isotopic spin. A baryon lepton symmetry is formulated implying that positive helicity leptons correspond to p, n, and Z (baryon with S = -3) and negative helicity leptons correspond to X/sup +/ (baryon with S = 1), XI /sup 0/ , and XI /sup -/. The weak four-lepton Lagrangian is written in a form invariant under lepton isospin transformations (SU/sub 2/) and physical consequences are discussed. Invariant four-fermion Lagrangians, quantum number assignments to leptons and currents currents, and currents themselves are given in tables. (auth)
