HEATS OF EXPLOSION OF UNSTABLE GASEOUS HYDRIDES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4688142

In continuation of earlier work on hydrides of Groups IV and V and boron, the heats of explosion of H/sub 2/Te, of mixtures of H/sub 2/Se with H/sub 2/Te, and of mixtures of Si/sub 3/H/sub 8/, Ge/su b 3/H/sub 8/, and B/sub 10/H/ sub 14/ with SbH/sub 3/ were measured. The heats of formation of simple hydrides of Groups IV to VII in Periods 2 to 5 show quite regular trends. The average thermochemical M-M bond energies in Si/sub 3/H/sub 8/ and Ge/sub 3/H/sub 8/ are larger than those in Si/sub 2/H/sub 6/ and Ge/sub 2/H/sub 6/ by amounts similar to the diffe rence between C/sub 3/H/sub 8/ and C/sub 2/H/sub 6/. A simple calorimeter for use with removable reaction cells and operable at elevated temperatures was constructed. (auth)
