ON THE DECAY OF STATES IN Si$sup 28$ EXCITED BY 1200-1320 kev PROTONS

The 12.75, 12.80, 12.81, and 12.85 Mev resonance states in Si/sup 28/, corresponding to E/sub p/ = 1212, 1261, 1274, and 1315 kev, were investigated by measurement of spectra and angular distributions and correlations of gamma rays produced in the Al/sup 27/(p, gamma )Si/sup 28/ reaction. The 12.75 and 12.80 Mev states are found to be 3/sup -/ states and the 12.85 Mev state a 41 state. The 12.81 Mev resonance state is likely to be a doublet state with both members excited by protons. The assignments of the states populated in the decay of these resonance states are discussed. The channel mixing parameters obtained are compared with those predicted by j + j and L + S coupling. Whether or not isobaric spin is a good quantum number in Si/sup 28/ is discussed. (auth)
