STARK BROADENING OF BALMER LINES AT LOW ELECTRON DENSITIES

Journal Article · · Annals of Physics (New York) (U.S.)
>Profiles of the Balmer lines are measured for a low electron density by means of a radio frequency discharge in a static magnetic field. The far wings of the lines H/sub 5/ and H/sub 6/ and complete profiles of higher lines up to the principal quantum number 16 are compared with theory. The observations cover cases where both ions and electrons may be considered as quasi-static perturbers as well as cases where a collisional, quantum-mechanical treatment for the electrons is appropriate. In the region of validity of a quasi-static description of the perturbations by the electrons and even in the transition region to the collisional behavior of the electrons good agreement is found between the experimental results and those of the quasi-static calculations. Correlation and shielding effects are taken into account. Satisfactory agreement is also found with the results of the quantum-mechanical calculations, provided recent modifications are used that incorporate a smooth transition between collisional and quasi-static perturbations by the electrons.
