Asymptotic expressions are given for the behavior of Stark profiles at large distances from the line center. For the broadening by ions, the quasi- static approximation is used throughout. Depending on the distance from the line center, the electron contribution is calculated with the usual impact approximation, with a modified impact approximation due to Lewis, or on the far wings of the lines with the qussi-static approximation. The validity regions of the various approximations are delineated, and the errors introduced into previous calculations of complete line profiles by neglecting the Lewis modification are discussed. The requirement that the transitions between the various approximations be smooth leads to a new estimnte for the strong collision term in the impact broadening. (auth)
