A Closed-Cycle Helium Refrigerator for 2.5 K

The design features and operating characteristics of a helium closed- cycle refrigerator for producing 200 mw of refrigeration at 2.5 deg K are described. The basic unit was developed for maser cooling applications, but is very suitable for computer and cryogenic magnet applications. The unit has cooled down to 2.5 deg K in less than 3 hr and is designed to operate for up to 3 months without maintenance. Equipment needing maintenance can be replaced with plugin connections. The cryostat containing heat exchangers, expansion engines, and all gas controls weighs approximately 150 lb. The compressor package also weighs approximately 150 lb. (C.E.S.)
