THE MANUFACTURE OF UO$sub 2$ FUEL ELEMENTS BY VIBRATION-COMPACTION METHODS (in German)

Journal Article · · Ber. Deut. Keram. Ges.
OSTI ID:4686889
With the intention of developing simple and cheap methods of producing UO/sub 2/ fuel elements, a UO/sub 2/ powder was placed in cans and compacted. In this method the particles are induced mechanically to move into such close positions that the highest possible compaction is reached. However, this will lead to an adequate total density of the fuel only if the compact powder has a suitable grain-size distribution. Such powders were produced by melting UO/sub 2/ in a H arc and grinding the hardened material. By vibrating and hammering round, densities of 92% of the theoretical value were reached. (auth)
