SONIC AND ULTRASONIC COMPACTION OF UO$sub 2$

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4781392
Two methods for packing nonsintered ceramic fuels by applied vibration are described. Vibrationally compacted UO/sub 2/ is produced with frequencies in the sonic range and yr-eld densities of 89 to 94% of the theoretical density depending on the diameter of the cladding material. Characteristics of the powder and cladding, frequencies and accelerations, particle size distribution, and floating restraint are summarized. The response of the tube and the powder at different resonance frequencies is defined. (auth)
