A continuing effort is directed toward the establishment of procedures for brazing end caps on HWCTR metal tubes. Voids can be minimized by controlling the radial clearance between the plug and cladding, and by directional solidification. A modified beta treatment method is being explored. Comparative grain size determinations on extruded tubes of uranium, U-0.08 wt% Si, and U-0.05 wt% Cr-0.10 wt% Mo indicated that all three materials quenched from the beta treatment temperature recrystallized during subsequent heating to 600 l C, acquiring a finer grain size. Hot hardness data from 20 to 600 l C indicate that the phases are not in a stable condition as beta treated but undergo changes during subsequent heating. Processing of two restraint tubes and the U-0.3 wt% Al-0.5 wt% Si tube is completed. (auth)
