DAILY PERIODICITY OF MITOSES IN MICE AFTER EXPOSURE TO $gamma$ RAYS

Journal Article · · Byul. Eksperim. Biol. i Med.
OSTI ID:4686583
Male albino mice weighing 18 to 20 g were exposed to 190 or 400 r total gamma irradiation and groups were killed at 6-hr intervals on the 5th day after irradiation. In irradiated mice and in controls, the number of mitoses in corneal epithelium was highest at 8 a.m. and lowest at 8 p.m. There was no significant difference between the groups in average daily numbers or in numbers at different times of the day except that irradiated mice had significantly more at 2 a.m. In a second series of trials similar results were obtained; there was a slightly, but not significantly, higher activity in irradiated mice at 2 a.m. and 2 p.m. In both trials the number of mitoses at 2 p.m. in the peripheral and central regions of the cornea were similar in irradiated mice, but controls had more in the central region than in the periphery. At 2 a.m. activity was increased in the periphery in both groups. It is concluded that the amounts of radiation used in these trials had no significant effect on the mechanisms governing the daily periodicity of cell multiplication. (OTS)
