The build-up of S/sup 35/, Co/sup 60/, Sr/sup 90/, Ru/sup 106/, Cs/sup 137/, Ce/sup 144/, and Pm/sup 147/ was followed in the single-cell, protococcaceae algae Chlorella vulgaris and Lagerheimia sp., and also in the filamentous types Ulotrix sp. and Vaucheria terrestris. A volume of 0.5 liters of filtered lake water at a pH of 8, containing 10 mu C of activity per liter, was contacted with 0.5 grams (dry weight) of the filamentous type of algae, or with enough of the single-cell algae to give 5 to 6 million cells per ml. After 8 to 16 days, samples of the water and of the algae were taken to dryness, and counted on an end-window beta counter. The accumulation coefficients were determined as ratios of the activity in the plant (per l gram of dry weight) to the activity in the water (per 1 ml). The data showed that the algae, especially the filamentous type, concentrate activity much more than aquatic life and the higher plants do. Vaucheria terrestris showed high accumulation coefficients for sulfur (a factor of 3875) and ruthenium (a factor of 22,300), while Lagerheimih sp. showed a high accumulation coefficient of 1500 for strontium. The accumulation of activity in the single-cell algae Chlorella vulgis was significantly lower than in the filamentous algae. S/sup 35/, Sr/sup 90/, and Cs/ sup 137/ showed the lowest accumulation coefficients. The absorption of Co/sup 60/ and Ru/sup 103/ was moderately high, while the rare earths Pm/sup 147/ and Ce/sup 144/ showed the highest accumulation coefficients. (TTT)
