WATER-RICH EMULSIONS FOR SCINTILLATION COUNTING OF AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS OF $beta$ EMITTERS (in German)

Equal volumes of aqueous solutions and toluenescintillator composed of toluene, PPO, and POPOP, form stable emulsions of highly dispersed silicon dioxide and an emulsifying agent are added. Acid concentration of the aqueous phase should not exceed 3N, that of bases 0.1N. highly concentratad solutions of salts may be emulsified with a dioxane-ethanol-xylene-scintillator and the silica. Maximum counting efficiencies in 20 ml samples containing 50 Nd% of aqueous solution are nearly 100% for BETA emitters of medium or high energy. C/sup 14/ (160 kev) and H/sup 3/(18 kev) are counted with an efficiency of 40 and 0.35%, respectively. Counting errors compare with those expected from radioactive decay, except if low-energy BETA radiation is counted. In this case preparation causes an additional error of about plus or minus 3% (standard deviation). Because of the high counting efficiency and the large sample volume the emulsions are superior to other liquid counting methods especially in low- level counting. However, low-energy BETA emitters such as tritium are preferentially counted in homogenous liquid scintillators. (auth)
