A BETA-GAMMA-RAY COINCIDENCE ARRANGEMENT FOR THE SIEGBAHN-SLATIS LKB SPECTROMETER

OSTI ID:4685655
An arrangement for measuring beta-gamma coincidences in the Siegbahn- Slatis Beta-Ray Spectrometer LKB-3024 is described. The gamma rays are detected by means of a 2'' x 2' sodium iodide crystal assembly situated in the iron pole piece behind the source. The sample is inserted into the spectrometer through a lock device without destroying the vacuum. The Geiger counter was replaced by a plastic scintillatcr photomultiplier detector. Disturbances of the pulse-height distributions obtained from the detectors occurred only when the spectrometer was used for beta rays of energies larger than 2.7 Mev, and were completely eliminated by means of compensating coils. The use of the coincidence arrangement is demonstrated on the decay of Bi/sup 207/. (auth)
