The use of special scintillation-counter methods for particle discrimination for investigation of nuclear reactions of neutrons with K, I, and Cs is described. It is possible, using these measuring methods, to measure with good statistics the spectra of emitted charged particles in the presence of a strong gamma background. The energy distributions of protons, which were emitted in the bombardment of the scintillation crystals CsI(Tl) and W(Tl) with neutrons, were measured. The crystals served therefore as target as well as detector. The energies of the neutrons, which were produced with the help of the T(d,n)He/sup 4/ reaction at deuteron energies of from 3 to 4.5 Mev, could be varied between 12 and 22 Mev by choice of the observation angle. From the energy spectra the effective cross section could be measured. An analysis of the spectra indicated that the statistical theory of the nuclear reactions probably cannot describe the circumstances in all instances and that direct exchange effects contribute considerably to the cross section.
