A beta counter and a specially designed guard counter are described that have a small size and that eliminate the natural background. A low-level beta counting assembly with only one high-voltage supply and without any anticoincidence circuit is developed. Its performance is not appreciably different from that of ondinary low-level counters. (T.F.H.)
