LOW LEVEL AND SOFT BETA RAY AQUEOUS WASTE MONITORING ARRANGEMENT WITH DIP TYPE THIN MICA WINDOW BETA COUNTERS (in Japanese)
An improved dip-type thin-mica-window G-M tube with window thickness of the order of 1.5 - 2.0 mg/cm/sup 2/ is described. The thin mica window is verified to bear up to 20 meters water pressure on a window area of 23.5 cm/sup 2/ . It is so constructed that the arrangements possess both an aqueous waste monitoring system and anticoincidence circuits of ordinary low level counters. The beta counter is equipped with two dip-type thin-mical-window G-M tubes, and these mica windows are placed face to face at 1 cm distance. When aqueous waste passes through the space between the two windows, radiation from the solution is measured. The above beta counter is surrounded by an array of G-M tubes in anti- coincidence. Instead of many G-M tubes, how-ever, the present method employs only one specially designed guard counter. The performance of the scaling instrument is not appreciably different from that of the ordinary low- level counters. The performance is summarized by the following data: residual background counting rate is 8--10 cpm, and measurable radioisotope concentrations in specific volume of solution are 5 x 10/sup -4/ mu C/cm/sup 3/ in C/sup 14/, 2 x 10/sup -4/ mu C/cm/sup 3/ in S/sup 35/, and 10/sup -6/ mu C/cm/sup 3/ in Sr/ sup 90/ + Y/sup 90/.
