Seeds of two barley sorts, Odessa 17 and Hibernating Moscow, in organic and forced dormancy were exposed to gamma irradiation (Co/sup 60/, doses 12 and 15 kr, respectively 423 and 55 r/min--Odessa 17, and 301 and 43 r/min-Hibernating Moscow). In seeds of forced dormancy irrespective of the germination time (immediately following irradiation or after 72 hr) high dose rate yielded a distinctly increased percentage of root cells with chromosome aberrations as compared to low dose rate. In seeds irradiated in the natural state, the effect of dose rate was variable. In the roots of seeds artificially released from organic dormancy and immediately germinated, the percentage of cells with chromosome aberrations was similar both at a high and low irradiation intensity. In similar seeds germinated 10 days after release from organic dormancy the differences in intensity of irradiation were as complete as in seeds irradiated in forced dormancy. The effect of dose rate upon irradiation of air-dry seeds points to the conclusion that during irradiation some processes are going on in the seeds, which specify the degree of chromosome affection as manifested in aberrations in the dividing cells. The percentage of cells with chromosome aberrations depends on physical conditions of irradiation (such as type of radiation, magnitude, and power of the dose) and on the physiological state of the cells of the irradiated object.
