A SULFUR-PHOSPHORUS ABSOLUTE FAST NEUTRON FLUX DETECTOR

Journal Article · · Nuclear Science and Engineering (U.S.)
OSTI ID:4682856
Threshold detectors composed of S-P mixtures are used for flux measurements on fast neutrons. P is incorporated into the detector in order to furnish a method for determining the counting efficiency of the counter. The counter is exposed to thermal neutrons with a known flux, and the P/sup 32/ produced by the P/sup 31/(n, gamma )P/sup 32/ is determined. The detector is then covered with Cd in order to prevent further P/sup 32/ production by this mechanism, and is exposed to the unknown fast-neutron flux. The P/sup 32/ produced by the fast-neutron reaction S/sup 32/(n,p)P/sup 32/ is then determined, and since the counting efficiency of the counter is known from the thermal- neutron measurement, the absolute fast-neutron flux can be calculated.
