DISTRIBUTION OF S$sup 35$ AMONG ORGANS AND TISSUES OF THE RAT AFTER INTRAPERITONEAL INJECTION OF RADIOACTIVE SULFUR-LABELED SULFUR-CONTAINING RADIATION-PROTECTIVE COMPOUNDS (in Russian)
The distribution of sulfur-containing radiation-protective compounds and their conversion products is of interest in connection with the mechanisms of their action. Sulfur-35labeled effective compounds, cystamine and beta- aminoethylisothyronine, and chemically similar ineffective compounds, disulfide-5- mercaptopentylamine and ethyl isothyronine, were studied. Ten rats were injected intraperitoneally with each compound, and five were sacrificed after 1 hr and the other five after 3 hr. Determinations of radioactivity in homogeneous suspensions of the organs showed nonuniform distribution of the compounds. With the protective compounds, the highest S/sup 35/ content was found in the radiosensitive tissues such as bone marrow, spleen, intestine, liver, and lungs, and in the excretory organs such as the kidneys. The smallest amount was in the blood, muscle, and brain. The ineffective compounds were distributed somewhat similarly. However, the amount in the radiosensitive tissues was smaller or was removed from them slowly. The conversion of ethyl isothyronine to a volatile compound, ethyl mercaptan, may explain its nonaccumulation in the kidney. (TTT)
