THE REACTION OF NITROGEN METABOLISM AFTER ENTERAL AND PARENTERAL ADMINISTRATION OF PEPTONE AND GLYCOCOLL TO ANIMALS DURING RADIATION SICKNESS

The blood content of residual N and NR/sub 3/ during radiation injury rises and corresponds with the periods of radiation sickness. Peroral administration of peptone and of glycocoli induced a rise in blood residual N. After irradiation during the first and tuird periods of radiation sickness after peptone administration, and during the fourth period of radiation sickness after peptone and glycocoll administration, blood residual N was not increased but decreased. The peroral administration of glycocoll to healthy animals led to a fall in the blood ammonia level; the effect was much weaker in irradiated animals. Blood NH/sub 3/ concentration after glycocoll administration rose in some animals. Curves for residual N and for NH/sub 3/retained their essential characteristics after the intravenous administration of peptone and glycocoll, and are similar to curves obtained after the peroral administration of these two substances. A month and a half after irradiation the blood N and NH/sub 3/ curves following intravenous administration of peptone were similar to corresponding curves in unirradiated animals. The nature of residual N and NH/sub 3/ curves was essentially unchanged after repeated irradiation (1000 r) and the intravenous administration of glycocoll to the animals. Control data on blood showed tuat tue leucopenia and lymphopenia effect is much weaker in repeatedly irradiated rabbits than in animals exposed to a single irradiation dose.
