STRONTIUM-90 IN THE BONE OF DOMESTIC ANIMALS IN JAPAN OF 1957-1962

The total annual average of Sr/sup 90/ concentration in the bone of domestic animals in Japan from 1957 to 1962 was cattle and 11.8, 14.3, 25.1, 20.6, 21.9, and 30.8 in horses, respectively. The Sr/sup 90/ content in the horse bone was about twice as high as that in the cattle bone. A similar trend was observed on the Sr to Ca ratio of both bones. No effect of age was shown on the Sr/sup 90/ concentration of the bone neither in cattle nor in horses. From 1957 to 1959, small numbers of goat, pig, and bird bones were analyzed. The Sr/ sup 90/ concentration in the goat bone, being 0.88 mu mu c per g of Ca, was considerably lower than that in the cattle bone, being 4.0. The Sr to Ca ratio was about the same between them (0.37 and 0.31). This level was much lower in the pig bone (1.03 mu mu c) than in the cattle one (9.3 mu mu c). Both Sr to Ca ratio and Sr/sup 90/ level were much lower in the fowl and crane bones than in any other animal bone. This ratio was 0.12 in both bird bones. This level was 1.83 mu mu c in the fowl bone in 1959 and 0.89 in the crane bone in 1958. The Sr/sup 90/ concentration of the bone appeared to be the highest in horses, the second highest in cattle, and the lowest in goats. (auth)
