Title: OPTICAL ABSORPTION SPECTRUM OF Nd$sup 3+$-DOPED LaF$sub 3$ SINGLE CRYSTAL: THE EVIDENCE OF A HIDDEN SELECTION RULE

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D

The symmetry of the La/sup 6+/ site in LaF/sub 3/ has been determined by x-ray and paramagnetic resonance. The x-ray results show a C/sub 2 nu / site symmetry in agreement with paramagnetic resonance. The optical absorption spectrum shows conclusive evidence of a selection rule contrary to the fact that a C/sub 2 nu / site symmetry gives no selection rule. Hence, there exists a hidden selection rule. (auth)
