The authors have studied the scintillation properties of LaF{sub 3} single crystals doped with Nd{sup 3 +} by means of x-ray excitation. The Nd concentration ranged from 0.001 to 12 mol%. The luminescence caused by 4f-4f transitions in Nd{sup 3 +} shows a maximum intensity at concentrations near 1 mol%. A 5d-4f transition yields an emission band at 173 nm with a decay time of about 6 ns. The authors have studied the intensity of this emission as a function of the Nd concentration. It appears that the intensity increases with the Nd concentration.
