Radiation reactions were studied in the lungs of patients subjected to x- ray therapy for cancer of the esophagus. Morphological changes in the lungs and pleura show a diverse picture depending on the time of death of patients (at the beginning of irradiation or several months after its termination). At early periods there is seen a prevalence of inflammatory changes, elevated permeability of vascular walls, and bronchial occlusion. At late periods there are observed marked pneumosclerotic changes. Supervention of secondary infection complicates the course of radiation reactions and may lead to the patient's death with marifestations of cardiopulmonary insufficiency. In view of this in radiation reactions in the lungs it is expedient to undertake an early antibiotic, cardiac, and pulmonary therapy. (auth)
