The effects of a high unsaturated fatty acid fraction, extracted from x irradiated rabbit liver, on rat liver mitochondrial swelling was studied. Strong swelling action was demonstrated at concentrations above 0.001% in 0.15 KCl solution. Swelling action on mitochondria was reduced by sucrose but not changed by sodium succinate. Serum albumin and ATP inhibited completely the mitochondrial swelling. The incorporation of P/sup 32/ into phosphates of swollen mitochondria was almost completely inhibited by this fatty acid fraction. (C.H.)
