HYDROGEN OVERVOLTAGE AND ELECTROCHEMICAL POTENTIALS OF ZIRCONIUM AND ZIRCONIUM INTERMETALLICS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4678737

Hydrogen overvoltage measurements of Zr, Zr/sub 2/Ni, Zr/sub 2/Cu, ZrV/ sub 2/, and Zr--90 wt% Nb were made in 1M H/sub 2/SOsub 4/ over a large current density range. Electrochemical potentials as a function of time were measured for the following galvanic cells: Zr-- Zr/sub 2/Ni, Zr-- Zr/sub 2/C, Zr-- ZrV/sub 2/, Zr-- ZrFe/sub 2/ ZrCr/sub 2/, and Zr--(Zr--90 wt% Nb). A relationship linking hydrogen overvoltage and hydrogen pickup is presented which is based on a relationship between hydrogen overvoltage and the heat of adsorption of atomic hydrogen. This relationship is coinpared with known hydrogen pickup data and the present electrochemical measurements. (auth)
