A simplified mathematical description of the catalytic hydrogenation of transition metals in the presence of intermetallic compounds has been carried out with the systems Zr-ZrV{sub 2} and Ti-TiFe as examples. The minimum concentration of the intermetallic compound ZrV{sub 2} in the system Zr-ZrV{sub 2} necessary for the reaction between hydrogen and the metal (Zr) to be completed is in full accord with the experimental value. 11 refs., 4 figs.
