THE EFFECT OF EXPOSURE TO THE $gamma$-RADIATION FROM A COBALT-60 SOURCE OF TUBERS BEFORE SETTING OUT ON THE YIELD AND THE VITAMIN CONTENT OF POTATO (in Russian)

The previously reported observation that the preliminary irradiation of tubers increases the vitamin C content and the yield of potato is very important because the potato is the chief source of vitamin C for a large portion of the population. This was further investigated by exposing Berlichingen-type potatoes, stored at 3 to 5 deg C, to 100, 250, 600, and 2000 r at a dose rate of 75 r/min; the number of sprouts, the density of growth, blooms, and the vitamin C content were determined after the irradiation. The results indicated that exposure to radiation increased the yield by 17 to 55%; the exposure range from 500 to 2000 caused the largest increase. The vitamin C content was also higher after exposure to 500 to 200C r. Best results were obtained 2 weeks before harvesting; during storage the vitamin content decreased. (TTT)
