LIFETIMES OF THE LOW-LYING LEVELS OF O$sup 18$ AND F$sup 1$$sup 8$

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B
The lifetimes or limits on the lifetimes of five levels in O/sup 18/ and six levels in F/sup 18/ were measured by the Doppler shift attenuation method. Large initial GAMMA oppler shifts for the gamma rays from O/sup 18/ and F/sup 18/ were obtained by bombarding tritium with 11 to 16-Mev oxygen ions from a tandem accelerator. The mean lifetimes in psec of the 1.98m 3,55m 3,63m 3,92m abd 4,45- Mev levels in O/sup 18/ were found to be 3.7 plus or minus 0.7,>3, 3 plus or minus 1, 0.18 plus or minus 0.06 and <0.1, respectively. The mean lifetimes in psec of the 0.94, 1.04, be >3 <0.3,)1.0, 2.0 plus or minus 1.0, 0.70 plus or minus 0.20, 1.1 plus or minus 0.2, respectively. The significance of these measurements is discussed. (auth)
