Superconducting Magnets; I MAGNETI SUPERCONDUTTORI

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4677985
Hard superconductors are defined, and the possibility of constructing high field magnets is discussed. In the hard superconductors, the Meissner effect is not evident and the induction is not zero at their core. The critical field is very high, with a critical current of the order of 10/sup 5/ amp/ cm/sup 2/. Experimental results on materials used for the construction of such magnets are summarized and show that the best materials are Mo/sub 3/Re, Nb/sub 3/Sn, and Nb--Zr with a maximum Zr concentration between 65 and 75%. The construction of superconducting coils is described. The experimental results on solenoids of Nb-- Zr with various Zr percentages are tabulated. Phenomena limiting the operation of superconducting solenoids are described, and the residual fields of the coils were measured. (J.S.R.)
