The design of a high-efficiency ion gun capable of producing intense streams of ions is patented. The gun has a hollow anode containing a gas or vapor under a vacuum of the order of 10/sup -1/ mm Hg. A cathode surrounds the anode, and the part of the cathode opposite the open end of the anode is a grid, which separates the space in which the ions are produced from the space in which the ions are utilized. The ion-production space and the ion-utilization space are at the same pressure. The stream of ions may be made cylindrical, convergent, or divergent according to the shape of the grid, which is removable. A dished, reversible grid makes it easy to change from a convergent to a divergent stream. (M.P.G.)
