One hundred and eighty-nine adult male rats were employed for these tests, 21 animals being used as controls, to establish the initial condition of the hemopoietic system. The remaining 168 rats were divided into two equal groups, one of which was kept on wheat biscuits to which a proteinvitamin complex had been added (a balanced diet), and the other on a diet of wheat biscuits (regarded as deficient in proteins and vitamins). One month later, 14 rats in each group were killed and investigated, with the remainder of each group being divided into two subgroups. Here 40 rats in each group were gamma -irradiated with doses of 700 r, emitted by the GUT Co-400-1 apparatus. Thirty rats of these subgroups were not exposed to radiation. In all animals, the red cell count, the hemoglobin level, the number of reticulocytes, the color index and the packed cell volume, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, the platelet and white cell counts, and the differential count of the blood were investigated. Myelograms of the bone marrow were also prepared. The results are evaluated statistically, concluding that the destructive and degenerative changes observed in the blood after irradiation were independent of the diet. The regeneration of functioning hemopoietic tissue was however much slower in animals kept on the restricted diet deficient in proteins and vitamins. (OTS)
