Tests without the gradient coils energized confirmed previously noted defocusing at 34 in. The beam intensity at full radius (38.5 in.) was a factor of 30 to 40 less than at 33 in. With the proper gradient coil current values no beam loss between 33 in. and full radius was observed. Extraction of 10 mu amp of 12-Mev proton with 40% efficiency was achieved. Protons at S to 24 Mev and deuterons at 15 to 40 Mev were accelerated to the extraction radius, and high currents were readily obtained at the extraction radius. Preliminary shielding tests showed no problems with 200 mu amp of 40-Mev deuterons on copper. The dee voltage regulator was adjusted, and satisfactory operation of the r-f system over the design range of frequencies, 6.5 to 15 Mc, was obtained. The three beam analyzer magnets were installed and connected. Tests on the two beam-preparation magnets revealed difficulties with polonium creeping and flaking. (D.C.W.)
