THE EFFECT OF TRACE AND DELIBERATELY INTRODUCED IMPURITIES OF THERMOLUMINESCENCE AND THERMAL BLEACHING OF F-CENTRES IN KCl CRYSTALS

Journal Article · · Phys. Letters
The thermoluminescence and thermal bleaching of quenched crystals of spectroscopically pure KCl, annular KCl (BDH), and KCl crystals doped with 1% by weight of Ca and Cd impurities were measured. The curve for pure crystals has peaks at 93, 165, and 230 deg C, while the BDH curve has peaks only at 80 and 157 deg C. The curve for Cadoped crystal has peaks at 67 and 132 deg C; for Cd- doping, peaks occur at 77 and 107 deg C. The peaks are characteristic of the impurities and are reproducible. Measurements of thermal bleaching for the crystals also supported the idea that the rate of bleaching and hence the thermoluminescence are not uniquely dependent upon the binding energy of the F- electrons but depend on other factors also.
