Measurements were made on the growth of the F band with xirradiation time at room temperature on RbCl and RbBr crystals. The first stage of the F- center growth curve has been found to consist of at least three substages. Thermoluminescence studies show two peaks at 85 and 110 deg C in RbCl which have been attributed to F-centers. In Cd-doped crystals an additional peak at 145 deg C has been observed which has been assigned to centers involving cadrmium. This assignment has been supported by the results on EPR of these crystals which give a hyperfine structure constant of approximately 3600 G. Additive coloration of Cd-doped crystals also yields the Cd/sup +/ band due to the capture of electrons by Cd/sup 2+/. (auth)
