A study was made of the gas-phase reactions of hot fluorine atoms. Trace quantities of F/sup 18/ (112 min), produced by the F/sup 19/( gamma ,n)F/ sup 18/ nuclear recoil process, were used as the source of atomic fluorine. Carbon tetrafluoride served as both the reactant gas and the source of target F/ sup 19/. The gas was exposed to a bremsstrahlung beam of 40 to 60 Mev electrons at 25 deg C for a period of 2 hr. With pure CF/sub 4/, F/sup 18/labeled CF/sub 4/ and C/sub 2/F/sub 6/ were found. On the addition of about 1 mole% C/sub 2/H/sub 4/ to the CF/sub 4/, a major fraction of the F/sup 18/ appeared as a constant yield of C/sub 2/H/sub 3/F/sup 18/ and an irreproducible yield of C/sub 2/H/sub 5/ F/sup 18/. When ethylene and iodine at its vapor pressure at 25 deg C were present, the C/sub 2/F/sub 5/F/sup 18/ and C/sub 2/H/sub 5/F/sup 18/ disappeared, and reproducible yields of CF/sub 2/F/sup 18/I and C/sub 2/H/sub 4/F/sup 18/I appeared instead.
