ANALYSIS OF RADIATION-INDUCED GENETIC DAMAGE IN SEEDS

Journal Article · · Abhandl. Deut. Akad. Wiss. Berlin, kl. Med.
OSTI ID:4674909
Barley seeds were used in studies of influence of preand post- irradiation environmental factors on genetic damage produced by radiation. It was found that under certain environmental conditions the seeds retain their ability to respond to oxygen during post-irradiation rehydration indefinftely. It appears that the critical moisture content at which aerobic rehydration post- treatment may be effective is between 10 and 12%. An interpretation is offered of the role of the following factors in production and reactions of radicals produced by radiation in seeds: kind and dose of radiation, atmosphere, moisture, temperature, and time between irradiation and hydration. Height of seedlings and frequencies of chromosome aberrations in shoot tips grown from seeds x-irradiated and then hydrated in a diethyl suifate solution are tabulated. (40 references.) (A.G.W.)
