IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO LIQUID MODERATOR NUCLEAR REACTORS SUBJECT TO VARYING MOVEMENTS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4674749
A method for reducing irregularities in the operation of a liquid- moderated reactor subject to varying movements, such as those encountered on a ship, is patented. A flowcontrol device in the moderator circuit regulates the delivery of the moderator to the reactor to compensate for variation in the density of the moderator liquid in the reactor vessel due to acceleration of the vessel. The flow-control device increases the moderator flow when the density decreases, and decreases flow when the density increases. Regulation may be effected by a mass, which is displaceable by acceleration and varies the flow cross-section of the recycled liquid. Various designs for the flow-control device are described.
