LEUKOPENIA IN RADIUM THERAPY

The character of the leukopenic condition in oncological patients was studied during distance gamma therapy. It was found that the developing leukopenia is often of functional nature without organic involvement of the bone marrow and commonly the leukocyte count reverts to normal values without any blood stimulating therapy. Thus, not every instance of radiation leukopenia with a drop of the lukocyte count down to 3000 in 1 mm/sup 3/ of blood should involve an interval or premature discontinuation of telegamma therapy. The data derived may be of practical importance in the choice of the physician's tactics in incipient leukopenia during radium therapy. (auth) ex
