HYDRAULIC CONTROL ROD DRIVE MECHANISM

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4673606
The hydraulic control rod drive mechanism described is housed in a thimble attached to and extending outward from the reactor vessel. The drive mechanism uses reactor coolant medium as the hydraulic fluid. Within the housing there are two concentrically arranged hollow, cylindrically shaped members to one of which the piston is attached. One of the two members is provided with radial perforations located in axial direction along a screw-like line. The other member has radially directed perforations that are situated in a plane normal to the axis. Through the perforations of the members reactor coolant medium flows from one part of the reactor vessel to the other forced by the pressure difference between them. Axial movement of the control element is achieved by turning one of the members relative to the other or by locking the perforations successively with the help of a sliding valve. The described mechanism is very crude and insensitive to dirt. (Gmelin Inst.)
