In experiments on dogs subjected to superlethal irradiation (1000 r), it was demonstrated that allogenous bone marrow transplantation does not produce a therapeutic effects inasmuch as normal hemopoiesis of the transplant is preserved only for 3--4 days. Starting from the 5th6th day there takes place transformation of hemopoietic cells into immunologically competent cells, which are the morphological basis of the transplant against host reaction. Transformation of hemopoietic cells (hemocytoblasts) into immunologically competent cells (lymphocytes) occurs via a number of transitional hyperbasophilic forms. of the type of peculiar hemocytoblast, lymphoblast, and prolymphocyte. The transformation of hemopoiesis is associated with the antigenic differences of the donor and recipient, since during repopulation of the bone marrow from the screened extremities in active proliferation no hyperbasophilic cells are formed and the myeloid hemopoiesis is preserved. The formation therefrom of hyperbasophilic cells and lymphocytes is due to transforination of hemocytoblasts and not immunologically coinpetent cells of the bone marrow, for this process was not as marked during transplantation of a suspension of lymphoid cells from the lymph nodes and spleen.
