P$sup 32$ TREATMENT OF POLYCYTHEMIA VERA

Phosphorus-52 treatment of 30 patients over a 12-yr period is related and discussed with respect to dosage, clinical and histologic effects, and complications. The initial dose used was 0.1 mc P/sup 32/ per kg body wt. This usually resulted in a remission of erythrocyte count for 16 months. No close correlation was noted between the duration of remission and dose, nor did radioresistance develop after repeated P/sup 32/ doses. Remissions after three to four treatments generally exceeded the first in length. Maximum depression of red cell count was reached 4.5 months after treatment, and the mean post- treatment count was 4.05 x 10/sup 6/. Both leukocyte and platelet counts fell to below 50% of initial values; however, no serious side-effects were generally observed. Bone marrow biopsies, which initially showed hyperplasia of erythroid elements, indicated that P/sup 32/ probably does not directly inhibit cellular proliferation but, rather, acts on marrow blood vessels, and eventually causes fibrosis of marrow space.
