A method is described for determining Zr/sup 95/ and Nb/sup 95/ in seaweed and sea water. Oxalic acid in HNO/sub 3/ is used to complex both elements, and, after destruction of the oxalic acid with potassium chlorate, Zr is precipitated as Zr phosphate and Nb as niobic acid. After removal of rare earth activities, Zr is separated as Ba fluorozirconate, decontaminated from other active isotopes, and finally ignited to ZrO/sub 2/; the Nb fraction is similarly decontaminated, and finally ignited to Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/. The oxides are then determined by gamma spectrometry. (auth)
