Manufacture of UO$sub 2$- and UO$sub 2$-BeO Mixed Pellets. Final Report; HERSTELLUNG VON UO$sub 2$-UND UO$sub 2$-BeO-MISCHPELLETS (in German)
Investigations were made on the preparation of sintered UO/sub 2/ and UO/sub 2/ with additions of BeO, manufacturing conditions, thermal expansion of sintered bodies up to a temperature of 1100 deg C, and their thermal conductivity up to a temperature of 1000 deg C as a function of the BeO addition. Test specimens of UO/sub 2/ and UO/sub 2/ with additions of 5, 10, 15, and 20% BeO by volume were prepared by cold-pressing, without using binders or lubricants, and subsequent sintering in hydrogen atmosphere at a maximum temperature of 1600 deg C. The density of the sintered bodies amounted to 95% of the theoretical density of the corresponding mixture. It differed by a maximum of +- 0.4%. The thermal conductivity was measured by determination of the amount of heat supplied and the radial heat flow. The results show an increase in the thermal conductivity with increasing BeO content. The addition of 20% BeO by volume caused duplication of the thermal conductivity related to that of pure UO/sub 2/. Thermal expansion was measured in a vertical experimental arrangement. The results do not show a well defined dependence of the thermal expansion on the BeO content. Small fluctuations of the measured values are within the range of accuracy of measurement of +- 0.2 x 10/sup -6/cm . cm/sup -1/ deg C - 1. The structure of the individual sintered bodies was examined by microscopic inspection of polished sections. (P.C.H.)
