Problems presented by the spontaneous alpha decay of the isotopes of some medium and light elements are reviewed. The whole range of alpha -active isotopes was examined within the framework of a higher-order, semiclassical approximation, making use of previous derivations in this field. The calculations are based on G. Gamow's semiclassical theory (Z. Physik 51: 204- 12(1929)), used as basis of the study. The nucleus of the alpha -active isotope is considered a quantum system of two spheroid bodies, the emitting nuclide and the particle emitted. The considerations are valid only in the Coulomb region, where r > R + R/sub alpha /, being the distance between the spheres. Thus, the problem of the interaction of the two bodies is reduced to that of the interaction of a low-mass particle with a central potential field. The formula derived allows the radioactive constants of alpha -active isotopes of both light and medium elements to be calculated, which was not possible previously; Gamow's considerations are valid only for heavy elements, yielding large errors in the other fields. Specific examples are given for certain isotopes, such as Dy/sup 152/, Tb/sup 149/, Cl/sup 32/, Al/sup 24/, an d Na/sup 20// Calculation of the half lives of B/sup 8/ and Be/sup 8/ yielded better values than calculations carried out on the basis of Russell potentials.
