INELASTIC NEUTRON SCATTERING IN Pb$sup 20$$sup 8$

Inelastic scattering by Pb/sup 208/ was studied with neutrons of energy up to 4.5 Mev, using the time-of-flight technique. Spectra due to practically pure Pb/sup 208/ were obtained by subtracting those obtained with a sample containin 71% Pb/sup 208/ and a suitable smaller sample of radiogenic Pb. Neutron groups denoting excitations in Pb/sup 208/ of 2.61 plus or minus 0.02, 3.20 plus or minus 0.02, and 3.48 plus or minus 0.02 Mev were observed, which correspond to the positions of known levels. Cross sections for the excitation of these levels were measured at several energies. No evidence was obtained for any other levels below 3.5 Mev, and upper limits have been placed on the cross sections for the possible excitation of other previously suggested levels. The inelastic cross sections were compared with preliminary theoretical predictions based on nuclear potentials of local and non-local types, and the implications of these comparisons are discussed.
